Honda Collection Hall at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit: Mega image gallery!

We have recently visited the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan and we managed to snap some photos of the exhibits in the Honda Collection Hall while we were there. The hall houses some rare items ranging from historic racing cars to motorcycles. Apart from vehicles and racing cars (including Formula 1 cars) from Honda, there are also automobiles from other makes such as MG and Porsche.

The hall also includes a cafe, a shop and even a reading room. Furthermore, there is also a restoration facility that features a transparent window hence you can feast your eyes on a restoration process if there is one going on during your visit. I will now let the images do the talking. Continue reading to view a high-res image gallery of the exhibits.

More information revealed about the new Honda NSX

Looks like there is more information available regarding the Honda NSX. To recap, the Japanese auto maker previewed the NSX Concept back in 2007. Then it “so called” cancelled the NSX project (which was supposed to be powered by a 600HP 5.5 liter V10) all together in December 2008.

Then, news emerged that the NSX is back on track but with a changed direction. It would be powered by a hybrid system, made up by a 3.5 liter V6 and an electric motor. Called the “Super Hybrid Sports” car, it is expected to feature an all wheel drive system, along with a combined power output of 450HP.

Now, there is word that the new NSX will carry a price tag, as well as output and performance figures that will match the previous NSX (290HP for the 2002 NSX-R), according to John Watts, Acura’s (US-based, Honda-owned brand) senior manager of product development. He also said that the new NSX will feature a platform, that will be sourced from Honda’s parts bin. Watts did not mention anything about the NSX becoming a hybrid sports car. I really can’t wait for an official word from Honda to clarify the direction of the NSX.

Honda NSX replacement to be called “Super Hybrid Sports”?

According to 7Tune, Honda did not exactly axe the Honda NSX back in December 2008, but changed the direction of the sports car instead. The new direction is greener, as apparently, the Japanese auto maker dumped the 600HP 5.5 liter V10 for a “valveless throttle” 3.5L V6 powerplant, that would be mated to a hybrid system.

Calling it the “Super Hybrid Sport” car, it should be able to collectively output about 450HP, and will feature an wheel drive system, called the SH-AWD. The NSX replacement should go head to head with Toyota’s upcoming hybrid sports car which is rumored to be next Supra. The new 400HP-plus Supra is expected to be based on the 2007 Toyota FT-HS Concept and is rumored to feature a Lexus-sourced 2GR-VSE 3.5-liter V6, paired with a hybrid system. Pictured above is the 2007 NSX Concept. No information regarding possible launch dates has been released.

Honda S2000’s successor coming up?

According to Japanese based Best Car, Honda is planning to produce a bigger and more powerful coupe that would go on to replace the Honda S2000, which will see the end light by end of the year. Apparently, the new 2+2 successor will feature Honda’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system (SH-AWD) as well as a hybrid drive system, like the one used in the Honda Insight. However there is no news regarding when we can expect to see the new model, if there is any truth behind the rumor in the first place. Honda also announced that it will produce a front wheel drive CR-Z hybrid small coupe in 2010.

Driven! Honda City 1.5 LX Automatic

The new Honda City has helped raise the bar in the B-Segment vehicle class with its sheer good looks and a bag full of features, all packed in a rather affordable package. Honda has upped its ante with this new Honda City and we have recently got our hands on the LX version of this hot piece of cake. Lets find out how it lives up to our expectations.

Design.

The first thing you would look at when you lay your eyes on something, is the object’s exterior design. This is nature, for us, human beings, and Honda understands that, very, very well, which is why it has successfully come up with a design for the new City which has put its rivals to shame. It doesn’t matter from what angle you look at it, the new Honda City is a good looking compact sedan, giving us the ability to own a car that is good looking, without burning a hole in our wallets.

The new City looks much more premium and aggressive at the same time, compared to its very down to earth predecessor. Up front is the very distinctive futuristic grille design with head lights that feature hints of the equally gorgeous Kia Cerato Forte. Measuring 1715 mm wide, 4395 mm long, and 1470 mm high, with a wheel base of 2550 mm, the premium feeling of the new City is further enhanced thanks to large chrome handles that help give it a luxury mid-size sedan feel. The lower part of the side profile is also highlighted thanks a curvature that is coordinated with the lower front and rear bumpers.

Honda cancels participation for the Frankfurt Motor Show, confirms Jazz and CR-Z Concept-based hybrids

Japanese-based auto maker Honda, which recently sold its Formula 1 outfit to Ross Brawn who then produced a 1-2 victory in its debut with Mercedes-supplied engines, has issued an press release indicating its official withdrawal from this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The reason behind the cancellation is the “unprecedented market downturn”.

The auto maker revealed that instead, it will focus on producing hybrid vehicles, perform research on fuel cell technology, as well as in strengthening quality and customer service in the new Honda Academy.

So far the Insight Hybrid has been producing strong sales performance with 18,000 customer orders in Japan just in one month, more than 3 times larger than its monthly target of 5,000 units in Japan. The auto maker also confirmed that it will offer another hybrid based on the CR-Z Concept in 2010, which will be followed by the Jazz Hybrid.

In terms of fuel cell technology research, the auto maker will perform long-term testing for fuel cell technology and hydrogen energy conformity in European conditions with the FCX Clarity. The Honda Academy in Europe would be a dedicated facility to train Honda and dealer’s staff in a way that they are able to exceed customer’s expectations in the future. The ground breaking ceremony was performed on March 23rd in Germany, and the entire project is worth 15 million Euros in terms of investment.

Done Deal! Ross Brawn takes over Honda F1

Former Honda F1 Team Principal Ross Brawn has successfully taken over the Honda F1 Team. After renaming the team as Brawn GP, the former Ferrari man who also brought home a number of constructors and drivers championship victories with legendary racer Michael Schumacher has decided to maintain Honda’s 2009 driver line-up that includes Brit Jenson Button and Brazilian Rubens Barrichello who also worked with Brawn during his days with Ferrari.

Apart from the driver line-up, Brawn GP has also confirmed that Mercedes Benz has been appointed as engine supplier for the team. The Stuttgart-based auto maker which is also supplying power plants to Mclaren will supply its 2.4 liter F0108W Formula One engines to the new team. The team will now 100% focus in getting its contenders to the race grid in Melbourne which is set to kick start on March 29th. For now, the team will participate in remaining pre-season sessions testing in Barcelona (9th – 12th March) and Jerez (15th – 17th March).

In another development, USF1, which recently announced its intentions to be part of Formula 1, has been forced to change its official name to USGPE. This comes after FOM (Formula One Management) revealed that the term “F1″ is not allowed to be used (with the exception of WilliamsF1), unless if teams add the term “Team”, example USF1Team. Force India was also forced to change its official logo, which now carries the lower-case “i” after “F”, instead of upper-case “I” which ends up looking like F1.

Honda Accord achieves 5 star EuroNCAP rating

Honda Accord is yet another car to achieve this prestigious safety rating system across its range. The rating itself has changed slightly as the previous car had a 5 star adult rating, 4 star child rating and a 3 star pedestrian rating, the new rating is a scoring system that takes to account, adult, child, pedestrian safety, and electronic safety assistance.

If a car reaches a mark of over 70% this would validate a 5-star Euro NCAP rating which the Accord gets at 78%. It has to be said that the Accord only gets this rating with the safety assistance devices (VSA according to Honda) if it is fitted in 85% of the 2009 Euro line-up as standard.

Along with the standard safety systems that achieved the 5-star Euro NCAP rating, the Accord also includes, Passive Dynamic Systems, Vehicle Stability Assist, Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering, Advance Driving Assist, and Advance Compatibility Engineering body structure, some available on request.

The selling point of Honda at the Geneva Motor show will highlight these particular features.

Richard Branson may take over Honda F1?

According to reports by Reuters, flamboyant billionaire Richard Branson who owns the Virgin Group may be interested in buying over the struggling Honda F1 team from its Japanese owner. The report indicated that Branson had talks with Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone regarding his possible venture and that Ecclestone is backing the move.

This comes after Ecclestone announced that he is trying is very best to get the team onto the grid at the season opener in Melbourne, Australia which is set to kick start March 29th. Thus far Jenson Button and Bruno Senna have been linked to pilot the team. We will bring you the latest updates, stay tuned!

Bernie Ecclestone pledges to save Honda F1

While other Formula 1 teams are testing and preparing for the 2009 season, the Honda F1 team is still looking for a new owner, but chief executive Nick Fry and former Ferrari-man Ross Brawn should feel a sense of relieve, as Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, has revealed to The Times that he will do whatever he can to keep the Honda F1 team on the 2009 grid.

The F1 supremo assured that the team will eventually make it for the first round of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship which is set to take place in Melbourne on March 29th for the Australian Grand Prix.

He also mentioned that he is not sure about the possibility of FOM (Formula 1 Management) buying over the team since it is the commercial rights holder of the championship. The fact that he even mentioned that means something. I don’t expect FOM to take over the team, but something tells me that the team might make it through, although there is only 2 months left for the first race weekend.

At the moment, just like when Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim was supposedly interested in buying over the Japanese team, the drivers line up for the shaky team include Brit Jenson Button and Ayrton Senna’s nephew; Brazillian Bruno Senna who can possibly bring in petroleum giant Petrobras and telecommunications company Embratel as sponsors.

Since Honda is no longer involved in Formula 1, the team has to engage a new engine supplier for this season and German based Mercedes Benz, which helped Mclaren and Hamilton claim the Drivers Championship last season from Ferrari, may take on the job. Even if Honda makes it, with a new name that is, don’t expect good results instantly, as we don’t know how far is the development of its 2009 contender, if there is a development in the first place.

Mugen works its magic with the 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid – Video!

Honda’s tuning arm; Mugen has launched a number of performance, aesthetics and practical upgrades for the Honda Insight Hybrid which was recently launched in Japan. These upgrades include an aerodynamic package, new wheels (15 and 16 inch), suspension upgrades, intelligent Tire Condition Monitoring System (i-TCMS) and aluminium sports pedals as well as Mugen floor mats.

The aerodynamic package, being the most substantial upgrade features a front spoiler with fog lamps, new front grille, side skirts, ventilated visors, rear spoiler with a diffuser and a triangular exhaust tail pipe. A large rear wing make up the rest of the package. The aero-kit which also gives the hybrid a sportier look, helps to create zero lift (which is why the package is called the Zero Lift aero-package) which can slightly improve its fuel economy.

The suspension upgrade includes new springs and dampers which help improve handling. The car also sits closer to the ground thanks to a ride height reduction of 20 mm. Especially with the side profile image above of the Mugen-Insight with a large rear wing and a white paint job, it reminds me of the Honda Civic Type R sedan, which is good!

Honda’s shelved NSX project to make a comeback?

According to Honda America’s Executive Vice President; Dick Colliver, who revealed Acura’s (US auto brand owned by Honda) plans of positioning its brand alongside other luxury auto brands such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz and Lexus; work on the NSX replacement project is “mostly done”. This statement further fuels speculation that the recently shelved Honda NSX V10 will be revived.

Honda announced back in December last year that it has canceled the V10 NSX project, which was supposed to be the most powerful NSX due to the uncertain economic climate. I just hope that once the sky looks brighter, Honda will get the project back on track. Lets keep our fingers crossed!

Sayonara to the S2000 with the final Honda S2000 Ultimate Edition

After 10 glorious years, the little car with a high revving engine, low stance and near perfect handling will be put to rest as Honda announced that production of the Honda S2000 worldwide will be terminated by June this year. The Japanese auto manufacturer also revealed that there will not be a replacement model for the S2000, after shelving plans to produce the new Honda NSX and halting its Formula 1 project, which till now is still up for sale.

To pay tribute to the S2000, Honda revealed that it will launch a final S2000 Ultimate Edition at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next month and that this last variant will be offered till June this year. This new model will still feature the same high revving 240HP 2.0 liter engine and transmission as the standard S2000 but it will be treated to a special Grand Prix White body colour which represents Honda’s 1964 Formula 1 car, a gorgeous red interior, color-matched stitching as well as numbered door sill plaques.

Honda to produce an Accord-based Cross Utility Vehicle (CUV)?

Apparently rumors have been circulating for months now regarding Honda’s plans to roll a CUV based on the Honda Accord mid size sedan off its assembly lines. Referring to a report by Temple of Vtec, spy shots of this new crossover has emerged on the internet and looking at the photos, it may seem at first that it looks like a conventional estate variant but a closer inspection reveals flares which will potentially house wider tracks and of course a higher than usual ride height.

The production version will most probably be unveiled at the end of the year and for now engine and transmission specifications are unknown. However do expect an all-wheel-drive system offered as an option, since one of the image reveals a rear differential for the vehicle with a transversely mounted engine up front.

2010 Honda Insight Hybrid makes world debut at Detroit!

The latest generation Honda Insight Hybrid was launched the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The five-seater, five door hybrid powered vehicle is set to carry a more affordable price tag, even cheaper than its Civic sibling, making it one of the most competitive production hybrids out there. This car has loads of technologies, so lets go over them.

Honda to drop the axe on S2000?

Autocar UK has reported that Honda has decided to discontinue its plans to produce a successor to the Honda S2000, and that 2009 is the roadster’s final year of production. This comes after the Japanese auto giant axed its involvement in Formula 1 and development of a V10 super car; the Honda NSX. Honda intends to re-size its plans for the future and feels that having such plans isn’t pointing the car maker to the direction it wants to be in.

Other programs that are rumored to be canceled include the development of rear wheel drive Acuras and a new V8 power plant to take on Mercedes and BMW. The convertible version of the Honda CR-Z hybrid has also been shelved. Probably key executives at Honda believe that such cars would not return enough money anytime soon, which is a problem these days.

NSX is Dead, but Concept to Continue Detroit Debut?

The 2010 Honda NSX’s development was scrapped a couple of weeks ago as the Japanese auto maker felt that it wasn’t a good idea to continue with the V10 super car due to the current world economic environment.

However, words are being exchanged now that the concept version which was suppose to be previewed in the upcoming Detroit Auto Show will still happen. Apparently the concept NSX was already completed when Honda announced its plans to scrap the production. Since that is the case, the preview of the concept will go on as scheduled.

Honda F1 no sale!

In reference to our previous report, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim is not interested in buying over Honda’s Formula 1 outfit and his representative told Eurosport UK that what is being exchanged in the motor sport paddock is just mere rumor. It was reiterated that the second richest man in the world had no intentions at all in taking over the Japanese team. As the 2009 season is getting closer, Honda better up its game in searching for a buyer.

Honda F1 sold to Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim?

Italian magazine La Stampa reported earlier that the second richest man in the world, Carlos Slim has bought over the Honda F1 Team. The report claimed that Carlos Slim, who owns Telmex; a telecommunications company that covers 73% of the telecommunications industry in Latin America, is interested in retaining Brit Jenson Button, and replace veteran driver Rubens Barrichello with Bruno Senna, nephew of legendary Formula 1 driver; Ayrton Senna.

The sale of the Japanese team has been thus far linked with Prodrive and Vijay Mallaya; owner of the Force India F1 team. However we have yet to receive official news from Honda regarding the take over. We will bring you the latest updates!

Honda and battery maker Yuasa to produce lithium ion batteries?

Japan based auto maker Honda has signed a joint venture agreement with fellow Japanese battery maker; GS Yuasa Corporation to develop and produce high grade lithium ion batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles.

The fruits of the soon-to-be built manufacturing plant in Kyoto will definitely make its way into Honda’s electric or hybrid powered vehicles but it is unclear if it is exclusive to Honda only or the batteries can be sold to other auto manufacturers.

The initial capital investment for the project worth 15 billion Yen will be a 51:49 split between the two companies. The newly formed company (yet to be named) will also manufacture batteries based on the Yuasa EH6 lithium ion batteries.

Honda NSX Stopped!

Allow me to present to you the latest victim of the global economic turmoil; 2010 Honda NSX. Apart from shutting down its involvement in Formula 1 (some say it was largely due to a combination of the economic slowdown, Honda’s interests in preserving the environment and the introduction of standardized engines in F1), the Japanese manufacturer has pulled the NSX program out of its production plans.

The NSX which was previewed as a concept back in 2007 was supposed to become Honda’s fastest and most powerful super car to date, as Honda planned to put in a V10 screaming engine into the engine bay. However, do not be surprised if Honda reveals the continuation of the NSX in a year or two when the sky is brighter. Click the link below to check out another image of the concept.
