Under the hood, the hybrid system from the HS250h is evident. “We are pleasantly surprised that we collected 100 bookings for this two-door coupe over just two days. 2011 Kia VG Sedan: Leaked images of the production model!

As you would know Korean auto companies are rolling out some pretty good looking cars these days. Apart from looks, these cars should drive pretty well too, based on the specifications given (although a final answer can only be revealed following a test drive). To be honest, as far as I can remember I have been into European cars and certain American and Japanese models can put smiles on my face too.

But lately, I must say that Korean cars are joining that list, without a fuss. I must also admit that the appointment of former Audi man, Peter Schreyer has tremendously helped the auto maker. I believe Kia is on the right track with cars like the Kia Cerato Forte and this, a Kia sedan that is code-named the VG. The 2011 VG Sedan is based on the Kia KND-5 Concept that was presented at this year’s Seoul Motor Show.

Judging from the leaked images of the production model, Kia has carried over all the good styling features from the concept, although it has been slightly toned-down. The VG sedan (which would be renamed) will be positioned above the Kia Optima / Magentis and is expected to replace the Kia Opirus / Amanti (finally!).

The production model should also maintain the dimensions of the concept which is figured at 4,945 mm long, 1,850 mm wide and 1,475 mm high. The concept version has a wheelbase of 2,845 mm. Compared to the Optima / Magentis, the concept’s wheelbase is longer by 125 mm. The Opirus / Amanti’s wheelbase is also shorter, by 45 mm.

Power wise, expect the VG to be motivated by a number of engine options including 2.4 liter 4-cylinder THETA 2 petrol powerplant with dual CVVT that is capable of 171HP at 6,000 revs and 225Nm of torque at 3,750 revs and a range topping 3.5 liter Lambda 2 petrol V6 that can output 273HP at 6,300 revs and 335Nm of pulling power at 5,000 revs. Continue reading to view more leaked images.

Frankfurt 2009: Hybrid versions of the Kia cee’d and Sorento unveiled

Kia has gone green in Frankfurt by unveiling the hybrid versions of the 2010 Kia Sorento and the latest Kia cee’d 5-door. The cee’d features a hybrid system that is made up by a 1.6 liter Gamma petrol and a 15kW small electric motor. The drivetrain is linked to a CVT or continuously variable transmission and the ‘greener’ cee’d can accelerate to 100 km/h from standstill in a modest 11.8 seconds while top speed is rated at 185 km/h. CO2 emissions output is figured at 96 grams per kilometer, which is 25% lower than the standard 1.6 liter cee’d. The cee’d hybrid also features the auto maker’s Start/Stop (ISG) technology.

The larger Sorento Hybrid on the other hand, is motivated by a U2 1.6-liter turbo-diesel (with a 2-stage turbocharger, instead of VGT) that is paired with a 30kW electric motor and a dual-clutch transmission. The Sorento Hybrid is also treated with airflow-smoothing under floor panels, a rear window spoiler, aerodynamic wheel rims, lower suspension (by 25 mm) and narrower tires (225 compared to 235 section).

The engine cooling has also been optimised using an active front grille that opens and closes, depending on cooling demand. Like the cee’d Hybrid, the auto maker did not reveal collective power and fuel consumption figures. CO2 emissions is rated at 119 grams per kilometer for the hybrid SUV. UPDATE: Two more images of the interior have been added.

After presenting to you a single, frontal image of the 2010 Kia Cee’d facelift, we now have some revealing spy images of the new hatchback, courtesy of Kia World. 2010 Kia Cee’d facelift: First image appears

An official image of the 2010 Kia Cee’d facelift has been found bouncing around within the Internet. Looking at the image, you can definitely tell that former Audi designer Peter Schreyer was one of the talents behind the design of new model.

In my honest opinion, although we can only see the front of the car, it is miles ahead in terms of design, compared to the outgoing model. The front end features headlights that look a little like the ones on the latest Opel Astra. It also has a redesigned front bumper flanked out with rectangular fog lights. Most significantly, the front fascia is finished with a ‘Schreyer’ grille.

All I can say for now is, ‘gorgeous’. A number of engines will be offered with the facelifted Cee’d, including a 109HP 1.4 liter, a 122HP 1.6 liter and a 140HP 2.0 liter from the petrol family. Diesel options will also be available including a 115HP 1.6 liter CRDi and a 140HP 2.0 liter CRDi. The 2010 Kia Cee’d facelift will be on the stands at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Korean-based auto maker Kia has released a television commercial for the Kia Forte Koup, which is the 2-door version of the Kia Cerato Forte sold here in Singapore. The Cerato is already a good looking car thanks to the magical touch of Peter Schreyer, and is very much crazed by many, even right here at home.

Based on that pleasing-to-the-eye sedan, the 2-door Koup help raises the ante. The Kia Forte Koup is offered with two engine options, including a 156HP 2.0 liter DOHC engine for the EX trim, and a 173HP with 227Nm of torque 2.4 liter for the SX trim.

The Koup EX can be driven home with either a 5-speed manual or an electronically controlled 4 speed automatic, while the SX comes with either a 6-speed manual or a 5 speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic. Kia reveals the Forte Koup 2-door in New York: Full Details!

Korean-based auto maker Kia has officially revealed the production version of the 2-door Kia Forte Koup at the New York Auto Show. The design of the already gorgeous Kia Cerato Forte sedan has been taken to another level with this two door variant, which seems to look more aggressive. The front features its typical swept-back wrap-around head lights with aggressive air intakes giving it a low and sleek profile. The rear is finished with dual exhaust outlets and a rear diffuser.

Available in two trim levels including the EX and SX, with the first being offered with body-coloured bumpers, power heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signals and 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped with P205/55R16 tires. The SX on the other hand stands out with 17-inch alloy wheels outfitted with P215/45R17-sized premium tires.

Measuring 176.4 inches long, 69.5 inches wide, 55.1 inches high with a wheelbase of 104.3 inches long, the Forte Koup which is slightly shorter and taller than the sedan version features a stiffer construction to help improve handling. Suspension wise, it comes with MacPherson struts and a stabilizer bar up front, while the rear features a torsion beam rear suspension with struts and coil springs. Kia’s latest iteration of the Sorento CUV has been officially unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show in Korea. With a front end design that features Kia’s latest language, and a rather bold rear end, the rather good looking new Sorento measures 4685 mm long, 1885 mm wide, 1710 mm high and features a wheelbase of 2700 mm. This 2010 version of the 7-seater CUV, which is based on a monocoque bodyshell instead of a body-on-frame structure, is offered with four different engine options.

Among these four engines, three are available for the Korean market including an Euro-5 compliant 2.2 liter R2.2 turbo diesel which develops 194HP at 3,800 revs and 435Nm of torque between 1,800 and 2,500 revs, a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder THETA 2 petrol powerplant with dual CVVT that is capable of 171HP at 6,000 revs and 225Nm of torque at 3,750 revs, and lastly, a 2.7 liter V6 which runs on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This V6 with quad-overhead camshafts and dual CVVT produces 162HP at 6,300 revs and 244Nm of torque at 4,000 revs. The range topping 3.5 liter Lambda 2 petrol V6 is offered for the U.S market and outputs 273HP at 6,300 revs as well as 335Nm of pulling power at 5,000 revs.

Depending on the market, these engine can be coupled with either a 6 speed manual or 6 speed automatic transmission. The automatic tranny features a unique ‘flat’ torque converter, which allows the unit to be 54 mm shorter, and has 62 fewer parts in comparison to the 5-speed unit, and weighs 12 kilograms less and boosts fuel economy by up to 12% over a traditional automatic transmission.

Buyers can also select two drivetrain options including a 2WD drivetrain that offers lower weight and enhanced fuel economy, as well as a 4WD version that is ideal for buyers who would use their Sorento’s to tow trailers (weighing up to 2,500 kilograms, depending on model) or to go off-road. Kia VG Sedan Concept Study: Leaked image!

What you see above is a leaked image of what is believed to be Kia’s latest concept. Called the VG Sedan, this mid size sedan concept looks as though its almost production ready, with design elements that can be translated into production, without much modifications.

The VG Sedan Concept Study will make its official debut at the upcoming motor show in Seoul, Korea which will run from April 3rd till April 12th. The concept will join the new Sorento SUV as well as the Kia Forte LPI Hybrid. Design wise, the concept looks really good, with an aggressive front end. From the image, a glass roof also seems evident. We will bring you more details once the concept is officially unveiled at the motor show.

Kia launches the Kia Forte LPI Hybrid for the Korean market!

Korean-based auto maker Kia, which is now sitting pretty high in my “best car designer” list, has launched its very first mass production hybrid vehicle. Based on the gorgeous looking Kia Cerato Forte, the Forte LPI comes fitted with a hybrid system that features a 20HP “pancake” electric motor that is sandwiched between the engine and transmission. The motor receives power from a lithium polymer battery pack made by LG Chem, the same company that makes battery packs for the Chevy Volt.

Compared to nickel-metal-hydride (Ni-MH) batteries used by competitors, lithium polymer batteries provide more power in a lighter and compact package, enhancing fuel performance and freeing up more space.

There is also an engine start/stop system to further optimize fuel efficiency. This “eco” Forte features a 114 hp 1.6-liter Gamma HEV liquefied petroleum injected (LPI) engine. With both systems, the Forte delivers 100 kilometers with 5.8 liters of fuel. The auto maker also revealed that it will produce a mid-size hybrid (possibly based on a Kia Optima) by 2010 and a hydrogen fuel cell car by 2012, all under the Eco-Dynamics range.

Hyundai & Kia in trouble too!

Hyundai and its affiliate Kia has declared a state of emergency management which includes a reduction in working hours and a salary freeze for its top managers. This is after its sales dropped to some 4.2 million vehicles from an earlier estimation of 4.8 million.
