Mercedes-Benz officially reveals the 2010 E-Class Estate: Full details!

As expected, after a series of low and medium resolution images, Mercedes has officially unveiled the 2010 E-Class Estate. As usual, the estate version is treated to same design language used on the E-Class Sedan and E-Class Coupe models, with certain distinctive styling cues. The B and C pillars on the wagon are blacked out with black trim panels.

The Estate that measures 4895 mm long, 1854 mm wide and 1471 high, features LED taillights that look as though they were taken right off the sedan, but the partition is slightly different due the tail gate. The EASY-PACK tail gate features automatic opening and closing. The tail gate can also be opened using the ignition key or by pressing the handle if the car needs to be loaded from behind.

In the trunk, there is also a load compartment cover that automatically raises upwards to allow unobstructed loading and unloading. There is also a folding load compartment on the floor. Overall, with its foldable rear seats, it has a load capacity of 1950 liters. Furthermore, there is an optional folding bench seat, meaning the E-Class Estate can feature three-row seating. However the passengers on this last row would be facing the rear of the car. Rear headroom is rated at 1010 mm (with the large tilting/sliding sunroof) and 1012 mm, without the sunroof. The elbow width in the rear has been increased by 50 mm to 1505 mm.

With the above mentioned self-levelling suspension, the ride height for the rear is always maintained, disregarding load levels. Compared to the sedan, the Estate features slightly stiffer shock absorber settings and torsion bar stabilizers, to help adapt to the modified body geometry of this model.

Which Mercedes is complete without its decorated safety systems? The 2010 E-Class Estate comes standard with a total of nine airbags, four belt tensioners and belt force limiters. The airbags includes side airbags, windowbags, and pelvisbags for the front occupants. Other safety features include NECK-PRO crash-responsive head restraints for the driver and front passenger as well as the ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system. Optional systems are made up by a DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control and the PRE-SAFE Brake function.

This system is also able to use the information received from the short-range sensors in the front bumper to tension the front seat belts at the last moment before an accident recognized as unavoidable, thereby reducing the loads exerted on the driver and front passenger during the crash.

Currently, five models are offered. From the diesel family, there is the E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and the E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY. Both the 220 CDI and 250 CDI’s are powered by the same 2143 cc inline 4 engine, but with different power outputs. The former develops 170HP while the latter pumps out 204HP. Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing: Leaked Image?

What you above is believed to be a leaked image of the upcoming Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing, featured in German’s Autobild magazine. There is also a section of the image showcasing the rear of the Gullwing. This leaked image came after a series of teaser images released by the auto maker, and after rumors broke lose yesterday that Mercedes will produce an electric variant of the sports car by 2015.

I can’t 100% confirm the authenticity of the image, but apparently sources are stating that the image is genuine. If this actually is the SLS AMG Gullwing, then I am a little disappointed with the design, especially with the front end and the rear end. Its not that the design is bad or anything, but there is nothing special about them. But before I 100% stand by my claim, lets just wait for official images of the Gullwing. Leaked images may not do a car justice. The Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing will be revealed the Frankfurt Motor Show is September.

Mercedes’ ESF 2009 Safety Concept

What you see above is a Mercedes Benz S400 Hybrid, that was modified and renamed as the ESF 2009 Experimental Safety Vehicle and was fitted some experimental safety features.

The ESF features a number of safety-related fitments, including inflatable metal structures consisting of side impact bars that can be blown to pressure of between 10 to 20 bar, seat bolsters called the PRE-SAFE Pulse that can shift the passengers 50mm into the center of the cabin to reduce injuries from side impacts, as well as an “airbag brake” which is located below the car and inflates to create friction with the road to help reduce speed and raise the car up by 80mm to compensate for brake dive. It also features airbags installed inside the seat belts.

More features include the Interactive Vehicle Communication that allows a car traveling in opposite the direction to communicate with each other in order to warn of upcoming bad weather or road obstacles. There is also an LED main beam that illuminates potential hazards that are detected outside the normally illuminated area. Mercedes will showcase the ESF on June 15th at the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles (ESV) Conference, which will take place in Stuttgart. Mercedes Benz says no to CLK AMG?

According to Autocar, German-based premium auto maker Mercedes Benz will not bother to build a CLK AMG high-performance car since the CLK has been replaced by the E-Class coupe. Prior to this the CLK AMG looked like an E-Class coupe, but was based on the C-Class, which sounds pretty weird.

The auto maker has decided to re-position it and rename it as the E-Class coupe, and also revealed that having an AMG based on the new E-Class coupe would be rather pointless, since it would be too close to the CLC 63 AMG. The 2011 CLS is under development now, and will also carry an AMG badge. The AMG variant of the CLS is expected to be powered by 4.0-litre-plus V8 with twin turbos that would be able to produce about 544HP.

2010 Mercedes S63 ad S65 AMG: More details and images revealed!

More information as well as low-res images have been released onto the Internet about the refreshed versions of the S63 and S65 Mercedes AMG, ahead of the official debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. This time round, both AMG models are more distinguished from the standard S-Class, with larger front air intake below the bumper.

Other features which are carried over from the refreshed Mercedes S-Class include LED daytime running lights as well as LED tail lights. Both S63 and S65 also get different grilles and both feature quad exhaust tail pipes with different sizes. Under the hood of the S63, lies a normally aspirated 6.2 liter V8 that pumps out 518HP as well as 630Nm of torque, which is coupled with an AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC transmission and costs 144, 823 Euros in its long wheelbase form which is cheaper than the S600 S-Class.

The top-of-the-line S65 on the other hand is eagerly motivated by a twin-turbo 6.0 liter V12 that is able to crank out 604HP with a massive 1,000Nm of torque. Talking about chassis twisting! Instead of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC tranny, the V12 in the S65 is mated to a 5 speed automatic, that works better to handle all that torque. ESC! For Businesses

Bosch along with development partner Mercedes-Benz recently organized an event to create awareness among businesses and the general public about the importance of Electronic Stability Programme or Electronic Stability Control as it is known to some. ESC is an extension of Antilock Braking Systems (ABS) and Traction control system that actually senses where the direction of the car as opposed to the drivers intentions. When needed, the system will use its technological magic to individual control individual wheels to stabilise the car.

Along with that, there is a long list of research papers and statistics from different governments to further confirm that the technology really works and greatly reduces accidents by a large percentage. There will be naysayers claiming that ESC will affect the driving experience. Thus it will be good to point out that ESC goes into action when the human body and control are null and void. As an example, when you’re careening down the side of the road back-end first, the technology works within milliseconds to stabilize the vehicle leading to much more desirable journey home.

Recently, the new Euro NCAP safety rating has changed to include electronic safety systems like ESC. Thus manufacturers wanting to make their cars more desirable will want to include ESC as standard getting their products closer to the revered 5-star rating. A demonstration using a Clio was done to show the difference between a car with and without ESC. A video below shows the complete perplexity of being inside a car sliding from the back end moving along at 40mph without ESC.

Other technological wizardry on offer was seen in a Mercedes A-Class that had a very convenient parking assist feature, demonstrated by the video below. The use of ESC will be mandatory for all new cars and vans by Nov 2011 and existing vehicles have till the end of 2014 for those in the UK, so car manufacturers and businesses might as well get in on the action early to soothe future uncertainties. With rev-matched shifts and a RACE START function, the E63 AMG accelerates from naught to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, all the way to a governed top speed of 249 km/h.

Mercedes Benz F-Cell Roadster

It has a top speed of 25 km/h, with a driving range of 350 kilometers. The F-CELL Roadster is controlled with drive-by-wire technology, and a joystick takes the place of a conventional steering wheel. BMW / Daimler cross ownership buzz

A number of reports have recently emerged regarding BMW’s and Daimler’s cross ownership plan, with most of them released from the German-based Der Spiegel magazine. A couple of days ago, the magazine reported that both auto makers are planning to exchange of up to 7% of shares among each other, in an effort to combine purchasing power to reduce cost.

The latest piece of information to be released by the magazine is that the Quandt family, which is BMW’s single largest shareholder (of 46%) is against such a deal, fearing that Daimler which also owns the Mercedes Benz brand would end up taking over BMW all together, just like how it took over Chrysler in the late 90’s.

An executive from BMW then revealed that both auto makers only have an agreement to share purchasing costs for certain parts. BMW also has a similar agreement with PSA Peugeot Citroen, where the German auto maker develops the 1.6 liter petrol which is mostly found in the MINI, while the French automotive group helps reduce production costs with its high purchasing power. This deal has also resulted in Peugeot fitting similar engines found in the MINI in its 308 models. Recently, BMW is also rumored to co-develop platforms for small sized vehicles with Fiat.

Speculation: Mercedes to produce mini roadster by 2012?

After releasing a sketch of BMW’s Z2 mini roadster which is expected to be unveiled sometime in 2011, resident artist Mark Stehrenberger at Auto Motor und Sport has released another sketch, but this time of Mercedes-Benz’s mini roadster. As reported earlier, Stuttgart’s small 2-seater convertible is expected to share platforms with the 2011/2012 Mercedes A Class and B Class.

But unlike the rear wheel drive setup of the baby Z4, Mercedes’ version is rumored to have its front wheels driven, by at least four power plant options including a diesel fueled version. The roadster is also expected to feature design cues from the 8 year-old Mercedes SLA project. Another speculation is the choice of convertible top.

The roadster will also most probably be offered with a fabric convertible roof, instead of a more fashionable retractable hard top, to help save trunk space. With Mercedes joining the bandwagon, Mazda’s very well balanced MX 5 / Miata will have more rivals to go against.

Mercedes Benz reveals the new E-Class Coupe!

Stuttgart based auto maker Mercedes Benz has released the two door variant of its latest E-Class mid-size sedan. Replacing the former CLK-Class, the new C207 is built based on the four door E-Class platform, instead of sharing a platform with the smaller C-Class, which was evident with the CLK-Class it replaces. The front fascia with a grille mounted logo is pretty much similar with the sedan model while the rear looks a little better with tail lights which seem slightly longer towards the outer sides. Although just a minor difference, it makes the rear look more composed, instead of giving an “almost there” feeling with the sedan.

The side profile, which to me personally, has hints of the CLS four door coupe, seems elegant especially with a rather long fully retractable rear quarter window. Also compared with the model it replaces, since its based on the E-Class platform, its 43 mm longer in terms of its wheelbase length.

There are five models available which receive two diesel engines and three petrol engines. Diesel options include the 204HP and 500Nm of torque twin-turbo 4 cylinder fitted in the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupe as well as a 231HP with an impressive 540Nm of torque turbocharged V6 made available in E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupe. Both models have fuel consumption figures of 5.3 liters per 100 kilometers and 6.8 liters per 100 kilometers respectively. Both engines also feature piezo injectors and the latest common-rail technology.

Other three models with petrol powered engines include a 204HP with 310Nm of torque 4 cylinder unit in the E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupe and a 292HP with 365Nm of torque V6 used in the E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupe. The E 250 CGI features direct injection while the V6 comes with spray-guided direct injection. Both power plants consume 7.0 liters and 8.5 liters of fuel respectively, per 100 kilometers. The range topping spot is taken up by the E 500 Coupe which receives power from a V8 that is good for 388HP and 530Nm of torque, which is just 10Nm less than the one in the E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY.

Transmission wise, all engines should be to either a 6 speed manual or a 5 speed automatic while the V8 should be coupled with a 7 speed automatic. The reason why I used the term “should” is because Mercedes did not confirm transmission options for the coupe in the press release. All power plants also meet EU5 emission standard.

2012 Mercedes SLK – spy shots!

Spy shots have been released courtesy of iMotorMag UK, of the 2012 Mercedes SLK. Apparently, apart from the obvious design elements, it is said to have a more upright front end and wing mirrors mounted on the doors. This is to make it more pedestrian friendly, in case of an accident.

Mercedes is said to be rolling out diesel versions of this sports car, to stave off competition from other diesel-engine performance cars but very little else is known about the engine. Expected to be launched in three year’s time, the 2012 SLK features a panoramic roof glass and day time running lights, as well as a fordable hard top.

Mercedes to release an SLK hybrid sports car?

According to Auto Express UK, Mercedes will be releasing a hybrid powered SLK Gullwing sports car. Inspired by the 300SL, the new SLK is set to meet performance and carbon emission standards with a high performance V6 and an electric motor.

The new SLK will feature lithium ion technology that was seen in the Blue Zero E-concept at the Detroit motor show and can run for 120 miles on a full charge. The 3.5 liter V6 petrol engine with regenerative braking KERS as seen in F1 and stop-start function runs 40 miles to the gallon and only produces 150g/km of emissions.

That’s the environment sorted, let’s get down to the gritty details. Yes guys, this wolf in sheep’s clothing has been said to do 155mph, a 0-60mph sprint in around 5 seconds and the tarmac destroying torque which is expected to be created by this V6 petrol engine with its electric motor would be as much as a V8. AMG has also been linked to the production and fine tuning of this rear wheel drive machine.

The new SLK is described as being more muscular as compared to the previous SLK, which seems to be less gender biased. Top half of the long front end is expected to look like the Aston Martin with its lights phased into the body work, large three point star stretched over the front grill and its also expected to feature a Formula 1 style splitter. The launch of the new SLK is said to be closer to 2012, and is being touted as the baby brother of the new SLC supercar

Mercedes E-Class’ New Rear End?

Since we started reporting about the new Mercedes Benz E-Class, we can’t help but notice that a number of people in the motoring fraternity are not really pleased with the tail lights. The feeling is mutual here as well, as the tail lights look a little ‘Koreanish’. No discrimination here but it is a Mercedes after all. Anyway, we have found this image of an altered rear end from Malaysia’s famous motoring site, Paultan.org. Apparently, a loyal reader by the name of Theophilus Chin ‘photoshop-ed’ the image. To me, its looks a little better!

Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupe – Spyshot!

Autocar UK managed to snap a few photos of this next generation E-Class Coupe in a town near Wales. This comes after spy shots of the E-Class estate and the release of images of the E-Class sedan couple of weeks ago. Up front, the coupe variant features a different grille which includes the three-pointed star.

The slopping roof lines leads you to tail lights which are slimmer than those off the sedan, and further down they feature roundish exhaust tail pipes just like the estate version.

It has been almost one month since the 2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class‘ images were released on to the internet, and now some spy shots of the estate version have been caught by Globalmotors. Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZero: an EV, an EREV and a fuel cell vehicle all in one!

Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZero

Mercedes-Benz will be exhibiting a trio of “Concept BlueZero” cars at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show in January 2009. One will be called the BlueZero E-Cell, which runs on an electric motor powered by a lithium ion battery. For those who want plug-in charging, the vehicle can do that.

Two hours of charging gets you 100km of maximum range. But of course, lithium ion batteries have range issues right now, as you can see 100km isn’t really much especially in Europe where cross-country journeys can be really long.

So the other two BlueZero concept cars are the BlueZero E-Plus and the BlueZero F-Cell. The E-Plus has an additional internal combustion engine installed in the rear of the vehicle which is used to generate power to charge the lithium ion battery. The internal combustion engine is taken from the smart family of vehicles, an inline-3 turbocharged engine. This can extend range up to 600km. This is what car manufacturers have been calling an EREV, or an extended range electric vehicle. Finally you have the BlueZero F-Cell, which uses a fuel cell that produces electricity from hydrogen.

Less exciting is the concept-like interior, which looks truly at home in a concept car. It uses organic green materials which can be easily recycled, to satisfy those tree huggers out there.

Last but not least… are we also at the same time looking at a preview of the next generation B-Class design language?

Mercedes-Benz’s innovative SPLITVIEW technology: 2 programs on 1 screen in the S-Class?

Splitview

Mercedes-Benz has developed a new display screen which will make its way into the S-Class range. This is a very neat feature, which enables both driver and front passenger to access and view two different programs at the same time! Meaning while the driver is looking at the GPS navigation system, the front passenger can watch a movie on the very same display.

This SPLITVIEW system is developed into Mercedes-Benz’s COMMAND 8-inch display system with the help of Bosch. The single TFT-LCD screen shows two different images simultaneously by placing pixels adjacent to each other. A filter masking the display divides this mixed image in such a way that depending on the seating position, only the pixels making up one or the other image can be seen. As a result, the driver and front passenger can view different programs on the same screen at the same time. How cool is that?

Instead of distracting the driver, the front passenger can access the entertainment system (DVDs, TV Channels, or music videos) using a remote control. The front passenger will also have the option of enjoying the selected programs via headphones. Mercedes-Benz will introduce this new system in the S-Class range for the first time in summer 2009.

Mercedes-Benz SLA Roadster?

SLA Roadster

These days, car manufacturers are introducing more models and variants from the smaller car segments which may well be due to buying trends and the current economic condition around the world. This time, Stuttgart’s Mercedes-Benz is doing its part with the possibility of putting an SLA Roadster onto the production lines.

Apparently, words are being exchanged within the industry regarding the SLA Roadsters to be built on the next generation platforms from the A-Class and B-Class. Mercedes-Benz were unable to use the platforms from the current generation A-Class and B-Class models as both are not ideal enough to support an SLA Roadster.

With BMW doing the same with the Z2 Roadster which is based on the 1-Series platform, it is only natural for Mercedes-Benz to reconsider building the SLA Roadster since it was previewed as a concept back in 2000 as the Vision SLA Concept. I am confident that such premium small sized roadsters will face hard competition from cheaper, but more “fun” cars such as the Mazda MX-5.

2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class – Leaked!

UPDATE: 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class leaked brochure confirms exterior, interior and engine details.

W212 E-ClassOfficial photos of the new 2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class made its way onto the Internet recently, way ahead of its official unveiling at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show in March.

The 2010 E-Class, which shares much of its design cues (especially the front fascia) with the Mercedes Benz ConceptFascination which was previewed earlier this year the Paris Motor Show.

W212 E-ClassThe front “squarish” quad headlights is a definite carry-over from the concept with the addition of Audi-like white LED strips, this time on both ends of the lower part of the front bumper.

On the other hand, the very “sharp” front end design has been toned down on the production one. There is a hint of the side profile’s upward lines on the production one as well.

W212 E-ClassThus far everything feels very much Mercedes Benz-like, until you come to the rear end. The rear tail lights gives a more “Koreanish” feel, instead of European, or German to be more specific. They look like they were taken straight off the B-Class. The exhaust tail pipes which are incorporated in the rear bumper seems like nice touch.

No news regarding what is under the hood but its safe to expect Stuttgart’s Bluetec diesel units; probably a 1.8 turbocharged and a 2.2 variant. For gasolines, do expect a variety of V6s and V8s. What’s most important for the ASEAN market is the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E 200 K, will it still use its faithful but aging 1.8 liter supercharged motor or switch to a modern direct injected turbocharged unit?
